PRP Q & A

What is platelet-rich plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a healing compound derived from your own blood. A sample of your own blood, obtained in a conventional blood draw, is spun down in a special machine called a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the other blood cells and components.

Platelets are blood cells that have incredible healing capacity. PRP has a far higher concentration of platelets than an average blood sample, so when it is injected into injured areas, it provides accelerated healing powers.

PRP therapy jumpstarts your body’s natural capacity to heal. Dr. Reytor floods an injured, aching area with the platelets so they can get to their job of regenerating and healing injured, damaged tissue.

What areas can be treated with PRP?

RP can be used in your joints to treat pain and dysfunction. Top-tier athletes have even turned to PRP injections to heal their joint pain and injuries. If you have joint pain in your knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, wrist, or elsewhere due to any of the following problems, PRP may offer a valid remedy:

Tendon injuries

Tendons are thick bands of connective tissue that attach muscle to bone. When injured, they heal very slowly because they tend to have a poor blood supply. PRP therapy helps stimulate circulation and the presence of healing platelets to help tendon problems. Achilles tendonitis or tennis elbow are examples of tendon injuries.

Acute injuries

If you twist your ankle or knee, pull a hamstring, or sprain your wrist while playing sports, PRP can help accelerate healing. Acute injuries aren’t always a result of sports, though, as they could just as easily occur due to a fall or accident.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative type of joint disorder in which the cartilage that cushions the space between bones wears away, causing pain and stiffness. PRP injections are effective in easing the pain of arthritis and can sometimes improve function, too.

Who is a candidate for PRP treatment?

PRP is a valid therapy for many joint injuries and pain, but Dr. Reytor evaluates your particular condition to determine if it’s right for you. PRP can also help you with rehabilitation and may even help you avoid surgery in aching joints.
